Description: Phonology, grammar, and the writing system of Mandarin Chinese; brief discussion of other major dialects of China; the influence of the Chinese language on Asian languages; the role of language in Chinese culture.

Prerequisites: None

Semesters Offered: Fall

Topics:
Sound and word structure of modern standard Chinese, the history of Chinese, the Chinese writing system, Chinese dialects, the relationship of Chinese to nearby languages, and modern language planning, reform, and standardization.

Expected Work: Several quizzes, report with oral presentation and daily attendance and participation

Exams: One midterm and one final
