Requirements for Standard Instructional Licenses

Requirements for New Jersey Licensed Teachers Seeking Additional Subject Teaching Field Endorsements

Holders of a standard N.J. instructional license will be issued additional standard instructional licenses when the following is completed:

  • Thirty (30) semester hour credits in the subject teaching field on the official transcript of an accredited four (4) year college or university. The courses must be in a coherent sequence covering introductory through advanced level study.

  • Please speak to an advisor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures before registering for courses.
  • Apply to the Non-Degree Program at University College: (732) 932-7276.
  • If necessary, take our placement exam. Don't repeat courses you have taken elsewhere.

Requirements for Teachers Seeking Initial New Jersey Teaching Licenses

Contact the Graduate School of Education for more information: (732) 932-7496

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Passing score in Praxis II/NTE Programs Specialty Area Test(s) for subject teaching fields and in the General Knowledge test of the Core Battery for elementary school teachers.
  • Completion of at least thirty (30) credits in a coherent major in the instructional subject teaching field. The elementary education endorsement requires a major in liberal arts or pure science.
    Successful completion of one of the following:
     
    • The alternate route Provisional Teacher Program.

          or

    • A state approved college teacher preparation program and one year of full time mentored teaching under a New Jersey provisional license.

          or

    • A state approved college teacher preparation program and one year full time mentored teaching under a valid out of state license.


Curriculum in Chinese to Qualify for Teacher Certification

According to the Division of Educational Programs and Assessment of the DOE, a prospective candidate for teacher certification in Chinese has to complete 30 credits in the subject area, which in this case would be Chinese. See:

These 30 credits in the subject area can be earned by taking upper level 3-credit courses in the original language given in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Rutgers University. The following is a list of courses at the 300 to 400 levels that are regularly taught in Chinese in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Rutgers University. All the courses below earn 3 credits each. Any combination of 10 of the 16 courses when offered would add up to 30 credits.

  12. Chinese 451 Readings in Modern Chinese Literature
  13. Chinese 452 Readings in Modern Chinese Literature (II)
  14. Chinese 490 Seminar in Chinese Literature and Thought
  15. Chinese 493 Independent Study in Chinese
  16. Chinese 494 Independent Study in Chinese (II)

Note it might be possible that up to 12 credits can be earned from Thomas Edison State College for scores on the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies' "Mandarin 12-Point (or 16-Point) Proficiency Exam" or similar tests, such as the HSK (Hanyu shuiping kaoshi) or the ACTFL OPI (American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages Oral Proficiency Interview). The remaining 18 credits, in the subject area can be earned by taking six upper level 3-cedit courses in the original language given in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Rutgers University.

or Certification in Chinese Language Teaching

Undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in teaching Chinese can consider the Five-Year Teacher Education Program: Foreign Language Education (K-12) offered by the Rutgers Graduate school of Education (GSE). The Rutgers Graduate School of Education also offers advanced degrees in language teaching, as an Ed.D. in Langauge Education, an Ed.M. in Language Education, and Certification in Foreign Language Education.
